After sinking to a series low the week prior, Fox's 'The Resident' (0.49, +0.14) shot up to its strongest rating in three weeks. Earlier in the night, 'The Bachelorette' (0.65, +0.03) was three-hundredths higher than the last time it aired. This episode of the series centered on the late British singer George Michaels and was completely steady with the Robin Williams installment from October ( 0.28). On ABC, 'Superstar' (0.28) returned to the schedule after being off for over a month. A repeat of 'New Amsterdam' (0.22) closed out the evening for the peacock network. Considering 'The Voice' (0.73, -0.06) actually lost six-hundredths in the 8pm slot, that small uptick is definitely a good sign for the future of 'Brea'. Ratings Analysis: NBC's 'La Brea' (0.51, +0.05) capped off its first season by rising five-hundredths on a week-to-week basis. This episode had a lot of potential to explore Al and Art's truths and perception of each other and their countries. It's a nice moment but as if the writers ran out of gas or lost their nerve, they toss in a convenient MacGuffin that reunites the family. To escape Art's wrath, Riley and Al end up camping in the back of Riley's truth, reminiscing about their time together in Afghanistan during night patrols. It's a sharp political zinger - I imagined the show writers rubbing their hands in glee - that makes you wonder if the post-dental surgery truth serum has scratched the surface of what Afghanis really think about behind closed doors and polite conversation. Things get serious fast when Al snaps at Art that Afghanistan is tired of being the U.S., China and Pakistan's game board. We've seen the "drugged post-dentist" gag, but when Al tells Art he's a bad father for letting his kids walk all over him, the next morning of regret escalates quickly into an argument about American versus Afghanistan culture. This is one of those episodes where the writing could have transcended sitcom norms.

While heavily medicated from having his wisdom teeth removed, Al mistakenly insults Art, which forces Riley to choose sides Lizzie tries to help Art, Riley and Al make peace.
